The latest developments show that Vande Bharat is moving beyond its original role as a fast daytime inter-city train.

Indian Railways News: Vande Bharat Express is entering a new phase of expansion, with Indian Railways working on everything from sleeper services and new routes to faster freight operations. Several developments are taking shape across the network, while proposals for new connections and changes to existing services continue to generate interest among passengers.

From a possible sleeper Vande Bharat between Varanasi and New Delhi to the proposed Surat-Udaipur service and the latest 130 kmph freight trial, the focus is now shifting beyond the train’s familiar daytime chair-car services.

Here are the top Vande Bharat updates to watch.

1. Varanasi Could Soon Get A Sleeper Vande Bharat To Delhi

A long-standing demand from passengers in Varanasi could soon see movement, with the Railway Board initiating steps towards introducing a Sleeper Vande Bharat between Varanasi Junction (Cantonment) and New Delhi. The exact route has not yet been finalised. However, there is hope that the service could be introduced before the festive season, potentially easing travel during Dussehra and Diwali.

Passenger demand is a major factor behind the proposal. Despite services such as the Kashi Vishwanath, Shivganga and Banaras-New Delhi Superfast Expresses, along with two Vande Bharat and three Mahamana Express services operating weekly from Varanasi Junction, demand remains high.

Sunday evening trains, in particular, frequently see heavy crowds. A Sleeper Vande Bharat could therefore offer an additional long-distance option for passengers travelling between Kashi and the national capital.

2. A New Delhi-Patna Sleeper Vande Bharat Is Being Widely Discussed

With Diwali and Chhath approaching, getting confirmed train tickets is already proving difficult for passengers travelling between Delhi and Bihar. Against this backdrop, social media has been buzzing with claims that a Sleeper Vande Bharat could begin operating between New Delhi and Patna from October 2, 2026. Reports of a possible trial run have also circulated online.

However, there is an important caveat: Indian Railways has not officially announced a New Delhi-Patna Sleeper Vande Bharat or confirmed the October 2 date.

Plans for a Sleeper Vande Bharat on the Delhi-Patna corridor have been discussed, particularly following the introduction of the Kamakhya-Howrah Sleeper Vande Bharat, but the final timetable and operating details are yet to be announced.

3. India’s First Vande Bharat Freight Train Touches 130 Kmph In Trial

Vande Bharat is no longer being explored only for passenger travel. India’s first Vande Bharat Freight EMU has reached 130 kmph during a trial run on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central route, marking an important development for high-speed freight movement.

Built by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the 16-coach train has been designed to carry parcels and other goods at higher speeds. Its potential customer base extends beyond conventional freight. The train is being positioned for sectors such as e-commerce, courier services, electronics, pharmaceuticals and cold-chain logistics.

If successfully deployed at scale, faster freight trains could offer businesses another option for moving time-sensitive goods across major markets.

4. Surat Gets Approval For Its First Vande Bharat Service

Surat is set to get its first Vande Bharat service, with the Railway Board approving a new connection between Surat and Udaipur City. The proposed train, numbered 26903/26904, will cover roughly 690 km in around seven hours and 30 minutes. It is planned to operate six days a week, with Tuesday as the weekly off day.

The proposed schedule has the train leaving Surat at 6.10 am and reaching Udaipur City at 1.40 pm. On the return journey, it is scheduled to leave Udaipur at 3.35 pm, reaching Surat at 11 pm.

5. New Surat-Udaipur Service To Cover Nine Commercial Stops

The eight-coach Vande Bharat will make nine commercial halts along the route.

These include:

  • Bharuch
  • Vadodara
  • Anand
  • Maninagar
  • Asarva
  • Himmatnagar
  • Shamlaji Road
  • Dungarpur
  • Zawar

The service would connect several important centres across Gujarat and Rajasthan while creating a faster rail link between the two states. The new train will also reportedly replace the existing Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat, which began operations in February 2026.

The new Surat-Udaipur service is expected to begin before Navratri, which starts on October 11, following the Railway Board’s approval dated August 31.

6. Mangaluru-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Timings Become A Key Concern

A proposed Vande Bharat between Bengaluru and Mangaluru has completed a runtime trial, but the timings observed during the trial have prompted concern among passenger groups in coastal Karnataka.

The South Western Railway’s trial involved a morning departure from Bengaluru and a return later in the day. However, passenger representatives want the eventual commercial service to be structured around the needs of people travelling from the coast to Bengaluru for work and business.

Pashchima Karavali Railway Yatri Abhivriddhi Samithi president G. Hanumanth Kamath has argued that the train should leave Mangaluru in the morning and return the same night.

The concern is straightforward: if the service reaches Bengaluru too late, particularly close to midnight, it would be of limited use to passengers travelling to the state capital for official or business purposes.

Passenger groups have pointed to the Mangaluru Central-Thiruvananthapuram Central Vande Bharat as an example of a schedule that works well, with a morning departure from Mangaluru and a night-time return.

7. Balangir Demand For More Vande Bharat Connections Gets Railway Board Response

The Railway Board has also responded to a demand for Vande Bharat services originating from Balangir in Odisha.

MP Niranjan Bishi had written to the Prime Minister on March 30, 2026, seeking Vande Bharat connections from Balangir to major destinations including New Delhi, Varanasi, Bengaluru and Jammu.

The Railway Board said Balangir already has 66 train services, including several connections towards Bengaluru and Varanasi. It also pointed to existing connectivity towards Delhi through the Samta Express and Titlagarh.

The response does not amount to an approval for a new Vande Bharat. The Railway Board has indicated that introducing any new train service depends on factors including traffic surveys, operational feasibility and the availability of coaches.

8. A Vande Bharat TTE Video Crosses 10 Million Views

Away from new routes and railway policy, a Vande Bharat story involving two boys and a ticket examiner has goneviral online.

According to the account shared by TTE Amit Gupta, two boys entered a Vande Bharat train that was stationed at a railway station because they wanted to see the train from inside. Once they boarded, the doors closed, leaving them unable to get off immediately. They later encountered the TTE, who initially believed they were travelling without tickets. The boys reportedly faced a potential penalty of Rs 4,840 and told him that they had only Rs 300 with them. The situation changed after the TTE learnt why they had entered the train.

Instead of accepting the Rs 300, the TTE reportedly told them that he did not want their money and asked them to get off at the next station. He also directed them to sit in the area near the doors.

Gupta shared a video of the incident, which has reportedly crossed 10 million views in four days, attracting a large number of likes and supportive comments.

9. Vande Bharat Vs Rajdhani: Which Train Makes More Sense?

As the Vande Bharat network expands, comparisons with the Rajdhani Express continue. But the two services are designed around different travel requirements rather than being direct substitutes. The first Rajdhani began running between New Delhi and Howrah in 1969, primarily serving fast overnight travel between the capital and major cities.

Vande Bharat, meanwhile, entered service in February 2019 with the New Delhi-Varanasi route and was designed primarily around faster daytime inter-city travel.

The biggest difference is the type of journey each train is intended to serve. A standard Vande Bharat is built around chair-car travel, with Executive Chair Car also available on many services. Features include automatic doors, passenger information systems and modern seating.

Rajdhani services traditionally offer First AC, Second AC and Third AC sleeping accommodation, making them more suited to overnight journeys.

The arrival of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, however, is beginning to blur that distinction.

10. Sleeper Vande Bharat Could Change The Long-Distance Picture

The Sleeper variant brings Vande Bharat’s design philosophy into overnight travel, with sleeping berths and features aimed at longer journeys. The trains are being developed with features including cushioned berths, noise-reduction measures and sensor-based lighting. Premium accommodation in the First AC section is also expected to offer additional amenities.

This could put Sleeper Vande Bharat services in a more direct position to compete with premium overnight trains, including Rajdhani services, on selected routes.

For passengers, the choice may ultimately come down to journey duration and timing rather than simply the name of the train.

Vande Bharat’s Next Phase Is About More Than Speed

The latest developments show that Vande Bharat is moving beyond its original role as a fast daytime inter-city train.

A possible Sleeper service for Varanasi, speculation around a Delhi-Patna sleeper connection, the proposed Surat-Udaipur route, trials between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, demands from Balangir and the development of a 130 kmph freight train all point towards a broader expansion of the Vande Bharat platform.

But the success of these services will depend on more than speed. Route selection, practical timings, passenger demand, operational feasibility and coach availability will be just as important in determining which proposals eventually become regular services.
