MG Motor India has discontinued the Astor, which was launched in September 2021. The model entered the mid-size SUV segment with several technology and convenience features but limited powertrain choices and infrequent updates affected its competitiveness over time. A replacement is reportedly under development and could arrive in India in 2027.

MG Astor: Features and Market Position

When it was introduced, the MG Astor stood out for offering features such as radar-based Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), an on-dash AI personal assistant, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera and heated outside rear-view mirrors.

The SUV competed against established models including the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. The Maruti Suzuki Victoris also entered the broader competitive landscape later.

Despite its feature-rich cabin and equipment list, the Astor struggled to maintain momentum as rivals received updates and offered a wider range of powertrain options. According to the supplied sales data, the SUV averaged just 112 units per month over the 12 months ending September 2026.

MG Astor: Engine and Gearbox Options

In India, the Astor was sold with two petrol engine options. The entry-level 1.5-litre naturally aspirated VTi Tech engine produced 109 BHP and 144 Nm of torque. It was available with a manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The second option was a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, branded Brit Dynamic 220, which developed 138 BHP and 220 Nm. This engine was paired with a torque-converter automatic transmission.

The Astor was not offered with diesel, hybrid or CNG powertrains during its sales run. This limited choice may have narrowed its appeal among buyers looking for alternatives to conventional petrol engines, particularly in a segment where competitors offered different engine and transmission combinations.

MG also sold the ZS EV in India as its electric SUV offering, although it was a separate model from the petrol-powered Astor.

MG Astor Replacement: What to Expect

MG is reportedly developing a successor to the Astor, with a possible launch timeline in 2027. The replacement is expected to use SAIC’s Intelligent Global Modular Architecture (SIGMA) platform.

The architecture is said to offer flexibility for integrating different powertrain options. If the successor adopts a broader range of engines or electrified powertrains, it could address one of the outgoing Astor’s key limitations.

However, MG has not provided confirmed details in the supplied information regarding the replacement’s specifications, features or launch schedule. Further details are expected to emerge closer to its potential introduction.

The Astor’s discontinuation marks the end of its current run in India, while the expected successor could give MG another opportunity to compete in the crowded mid-size SUV segment.
