Volvo has introduced the EX90 in India at an introductory price of Rs. 1.26 crore (ex-showroom), positioning the electric SUV as the brand’s new flagship. The EX90 is offered exclusively in a six-seat configuration and sits above the XC90 in Volvo’s India line-up.

At its launch price, the EX90 commands a premium of Rs. 27.2 lakhs over the XC90. Unlike the older combustion-powered SUV, however, the EX90 is based on Volvo’s newer SPA2 electric vehicle architecture and brings a substantially different powertrain and technology package.

For bookings made until December 31, 2026, Volvo is offering an 11kW home charger, a three-year service package and an assured buyback programme covering 65 percent of the vehicle’s value after three years.

Volvo EX90: battery, performance and range

The India-spec EX90 comes with a 106kWh battery paired with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system. The setup produces 456hp and 670Nm, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in a claimed 5.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/hr.

Volvo claims a WLTP range of 625 km. Real-world efficiency is likely to be lower, and testing has indicated an efficiency figure of around 5.5 km/kWh, suggesting a practical range of approximately 580 km under suitable conditions.

For home charging, the EX90 supports 11kW AC charging, with a full charge taking around 11 hours. The SUV’s 800-volt electrical architecture also allows DC fast charging at up to 350kW. Under ideal conditions, Volvo claims a 10-80 percent charge can be completed in about 22 minutes.

Volvo EX90 design

The EX90 adopts Volvo’s latest interpretation of its understated design language. The closed-off front fascia does away with a conventional grille, while the headlamps feature Volvo’s T-shaped lighting signature with a pixel-inspired DRL pattern. Slim vertical lighting elements sit lower down on the front bumper.

The SUV has a relatively upright profile and measures up to a 2,985mm wheelbase. It rides on 21-inch alloy wheels as standard and offers 210 mm of ground clearance. Standard air suspension can raise this figure to as much as 250 mm when required.

At the rear, the EX90 gets vertically positioned C-shaped tail-lamps, complemented by additional lighting elements around the rear glass. The Volvo lettering is placed prominently on the tailgate. Buyers can choose from six exterior colours: Crystal White, Denim Blue, Mulberry Red, Onyx Black, Sand Dune and Vapour Grey.

Volvo EX90 interior and features

The cabin follows the minimalist approach seen across Volvo’s latest-generation models. It combines Nappa leather upholstery with aluminium detailing and a three-spoke steering wheel. A 14.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen dominates the dashboard, while a separate 9-inch display provides information to the driver.

As with several newer Volvo models, many vehicle functions are accessed through the touchscreen rather than dedicated physical switches. This keeps the dashboard visually clean, although buyers who prefer conventional controls may need some familiarisation.

For India, the EX90 is available only with six seats. The second row features two captain’s chairs with sliding and reclining functions, providing a generous amount of space for passengers. However, unlike the front seats, these don’t get functions such as ventilation, heating, massage or electric adjustment.

Access to the third row is relatively straightforward through the gap between the second-row captain’s chairs. The rearmost seats are more suitable for children or shorter journeys for adults, with available space being more limited than in the first two rows.

Boot capacity stands at 324 litres with all three rows in use. Folding the third row increases luggage capacity to 690 litres, while an additional 46-litre storage compartment is available under the bonnet.

Volvo EX90 equipment

The EX90 gets a long list of standard equipment, including four-zone climate control, a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof with switchable transparency.

Safety and driver-assistance equipment includes nine airbags, a 360-degree camera and an ADAS package. Other features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic parking assistance, a digital key, wireless smartphone charging and a cabin air purification system.

Volvo EX90 rivals in India

The EX90 enters a relatively small but increasingly competitive electric luxury SUV segment. Its key rivals include the Kia EV9 and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV 580.

At Rs. 1.26 crore, the Volvo is priced below both models, with the Kia EV9 positioned at Rs. 1.30 crore and the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV 580 at Rs. 1.49 crore (all prices, ex-showroom).

The EX90 therefore combines a larger battery, all-wheel drive, three-row seating and Volvo’s extensive safety and technology package at a comparatively lower entry price than its two closest rivals. Its 6-seat-only configuration and the relatively limited third-row space, however, will be factors for buyers prioritising maximum passenger capacity.
