A new viral video shows a 2-km jam on Delhi’s Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor, with an ambulance allegedly stuck. Delhi Traffic Police blamed a structural bottleneck, where 8-9 lanes converge into three, and Google Maps showing the route clear, days after a drone survey recently began scrutinising its merging points.

The video was posted on X by a journalist, who wrote that the Mayur Vihar-to-AIIMS stretch was jammed for about 2 km, adding it was not even 10 days since inauguration and commuters had been promised AIIMS in 15 minutes.

Replying under the post, the Lajpat Nagar traffic inspector said the old Barapullah flyover has three lanes, the new Mayur Vihar-side flyover roughly three, and the Sarai Kale Khan and DND loops three each, all merging at one point. Staff were regulating traffic there.

Where Is The Jam Building Up?

The Times of India reported last week that police found the biggest bottleneck near Sarai Kale Khan, by the Sundial Park loop, where loop traffic meets the elevated stretch abruptly because of the merge’s sharp geometry.

A second trouble spot is in the older section, where traffic from the Guru Harkrishan Medical Institute side joins. Police also flagged last-minute lane changes, known as scissor cuts, and wrong-side driving.

How Did The First Week Go?

The corridor was approved in 2014, started in 2015 and was due in 2017. Amit Shah inaugurated the Rs 1,635-crore project on 29 September, with officials promising a 15-20 minute Mayur Vihar-AIIMS run.

Experts, quoted by Time Out, had cautioned that it could add to congestion near Sarai Kale Khan. Last Wednesday it noted a 3-km jam, and TOI said many motorists crawled for two hours or more. Congestion persisted on Thursday. By 2 October, police and PWD were holding a joint meeting and a drone survey of lane configuration.

One commuter, quoted by TOI, claimed a five-km jam for the second day running and called the flyover a public hazard, warning that in an emergency nobody could even take a detour.

Is Google Maps Adding To The Problem?

Police say the congestion is not reflected on Google Maps, so commuters keep choosing the route. TOI’s sources said Google told police its real-time system needs a few days of traffic data after a new road opens. Police’s latest alert repeats the complaint.

What Is Being Done Now?

Personnel are deployed at crucial times to keep traffic moving in stop-and-go fashion, and traffic from Phase-3 is being diverted towards NH-24/DND. Police have not said how long the diversion will stay.

Officials had earlier said the exercise has pinpointed spots where flow can improve without fresh construction.

Delhi Traffic Police attributed the congestion to a structural bottleneck where multiple lanes converge into three, combined with Google Maps failing to reflect the heavy traffic because real-time systems require data after a new road opens.
