Traffic restrictions are in place around Jantar Mantar on October 2, 2026. Here are the roads commuters should avoid and the diversions to expect

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory on traffic restrictions and regulated movement in and around Jantar Mantar and adjoining areas on October 2, 2026, in view of planned protests in the area.

Commuters and motorists have been advised to plan their journeys in advance, avoid affected stretches wherever possible and allow additional travel time.

Traffic Restrictions And Diversions

Traffic diversions and regulations will be implemented around Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, GPO, Tolstoy Marg, Jantar Mantar Road, Parliament Street and adjoining roads.

According to the advisory:

  • Connaught Place Towards Patel Chowk: Traffic will be diverted through alternate routes as directed by traffic personnel.
  • Patel Chowk Towards GPO: Traffic movement will be regulated or diverted at appropriate points.
  • Tolstoy Marg: Traffic will be regulated or diverted, with commuters advised to avoid the stretch wherever possible.
  • Jantar Mantar Road: Traffic movement will be restricted or diverted, and motorists have been advised to use alternate routes.
  • Parliament Street And Adjoining Roads: Traffic movement may be regulated, with diversions and barricading put in place as required.

Motorists have been asked to follow diversion signs and instructions issued by Delhi Traffic Police personnel deployed in the area.

Delhi Metro Closes Entry, Exit At 11 Stations

Delhi Metro services have also been affected amid heightened security arrangements for the protest at Jantar Mantar. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has temporarily closed entry and exit at 11 stations, including Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, Seva Teerth, Mandi House, Lok Kalyan Marg, INA, Chawri Bazar, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg and New Delhi.

However, interchange facilities remain available at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat and New Delhi, allowing passengers to change Metro lines despite the closure of station entry and exit points.

Public Advisory For Commuters

The Delhi Traffic Police has advised the public to avoid Jantar Mantar, Parliament Street, Ashoka Road and adjoining roads wherever possible.

Commuters travelling towards Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, GPO, Parliament Street and other parts of Central Delhi have been advised to plan alternate routes in advance and allow additional travel time.

The police have also asked motorists to remain patient, follow traffic rules and cooperate with personnel deployed for traffic regulation.

Stopping or parking vehicles on or near the regulated stretches is prohibited, as it could further disrupt traffic movement.

Section 163 Restrictions In New Delhi District

Restrictions have also been imposed in the New Delhi district under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), as ordered by the competent authority. Under the order applicable to the Parliament Street subdivision, public meetings, gatherings of five or more people, processions, demonstrations and sit-ins are prohibited without written permission.

The order also prohibits the carrying of weapons, banners, posters, sticks, spears, swords and rods in the specified area. Sloganeering, speeches, processions and demonstrations are also prohibited without the required permission.

Dharna or picketing in any public place is not permitted without written authorisation.

The entire Parliament Street area falls within the restricted zone, while a designated portion of Jantar Mantar Road is excluded, as shown in the map accompanying the order.

Even where prior written permission has been granted for an activity, it will not be permitted to continue after 5 pm.

The order came into effect on August 23, 2026, and will remain in force until October 21, 2026, unless revoked earlier.

Security Arrangements Amid Planned Protests

Several organisations, including the Aam Aadmi Party, Left parties and the Youth Congress, have announced protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on October 2. In view of the planned gatherings, Delhi Police has made additional security arrangements across the New Delhi area.

Additional personnel have been deployed in VVIP areas, while paramilitary personnel have also been deployed alongside Delhi Police.

Security has also been stepped up along Delhi’s borders with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Police Urge Public To Cooperate

The Delhi Police has urged the public to comply with directions issued by competent authorities and on-ground personnel.

Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel through the affected areas and use alternate routes wherever possible to minimise congestion. Violations of the restrictions may result in legal action.
