GURUGRAM: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the process to set up a 16-lane toll plaza at Janaula on the under-construction Gurugram-Pataudi-Rewari highway, as the 45-km corridor moves closer to completion.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the toll plaza, located around 19 km from the Dwarka Expressway, will have eight lanes in each direction and operate through a multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system, allowing vehicles to pass through without stopping at conventional toll booths.

NHAI officials said construction of the toll plaza is already around 80% complete. The facility is expected to generate about Rs 57 crore in annual toll revenue for the highway authority.

16-Lane Plaza To Use Free-Flow Tolling

The MLFF system will use overhead gantries to detect and process toll payments as vehicles travel along the highway.

The contractor awarded the MLFF tender will design, supply, install, test and commission the tolling infrastructure. One gantry will be installed on the main carriageway, including paved shoulders, in each direction.

According to NHAI officials, the gantries will be positioned approximately 350 metres downstream of the respective toll-plaza location in the direction of traffic movement.

The bid for the MLFF system is scheduled to open on October 23.

A senior NHAI official said the Janaula plaza would have 16 tolling lanes in total, with eight on either side of the highway.

Rs 1,900-Crore Highway Nears Completion

The 45-km Gurugram-Pataudi-Rewari highway has been built at a cost of around Rs 1,900 crore, including Rs 600 crore spent on land acquisition.

Most of the project has been completed, although a railway overbridge at Pahari village and a flyover at the Dwarka Expressway remain pending. Officials said both are expected to be completed by March.

Meanwhile, work on several other structures is moving towards completion.

The NHAI has started load-bearing tests on the Jamalpur flyover, which officials said is likely to open to traffic in the next few days. The Patli flyover is also almost complete and is expected to open within the next 15 days.

Wazirpur Flyover Awaits Power-Line Shift

The flyover at Wazirpur has already been constructed but is awaiting the shifting of high-tension power lines.

NHAI officials said the power lines are expected to be shifted soon, after which the flyover can be opened to traffic.

Earlier in September, the highway authority opened three flyovers between Dwarka Expressway and Wazirpur, along with the Pataudi bypass. The openings have already reduced congestion on those stretches, officials said.

70% Gurugram-Rewari Traffic Expected To Shift

The new highway is expected to significantly alter traffic movement between Gurugram and Rewari. At present, motorists travelling between the two cities largely use the Delhi-Jaipur Highway. NHAI officials estimate that around 70% of this traffic could shift to the new Gurugram-Pataudi-Rewari route once the corridor becomes fully operational.

The shift is expected to ease pressure on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway as well as the existing road connecting Gurugram with Pataudi and Rewari.

With the main highway nearing completion and key flyovers and interchanges being opened in phases, the Janaula toll plaza is being developed alongside the final stages of the corridor – bringing the new route closer to full operation.
