Thane News: Commuters at Thane railway station may soon have a more predictable way to find an auto-rickshaw, with the Thane Regional Transport Office (RTO) proposing a prepaid auto service there.

The proposal is now awaiting the Maharashtra government’s approval, following which the prepaid auto service could be introduced at Thane railway station. The initiative is aimed at addressing persistent passenger complaints over fare negotiations, arbitrary charges, refusals to take passengers and disagreements over destinations.

Fixed Fares To Be Paid Before The Journey

According to a report in Mumbai Live, under the proposed arrangement, passengers arriving at Thane railway station will give their destination at a prepaid counter and pay the applicable fare before beginning their journey. An auto-rickshaw will then be allotted to the passenger.

Thane Deputy RTO Hemangini Patil said fares for destinations within approximately 6-8 km of the railway station have already been finalised.

The system is intended to bring greater transparency to auto-rickshaw services by ensuring passengers know the fare in advance. It could also minimise disputes between commuters and drivers over the amount due.

RTO Officials To Keep Watch During Peak Hours

The administration is also planning to strengthen monitoring around Thane railway station by deploying two RTO officials during the morning and evening peak periods.

The officials will work in four-hour shifts and oversee auto-rickshaw operations in the station area. They will also address passenger complaints and take action in cases of driver misconduct.

The increased presence of transport officials is expected to improve discipline around the station, enhance commuter safety and help maintain smoother traffic movement.

Thane Traffic Hotspots Also Under Review

The prepaid auto proposal was discussed at a joint meeting attended by Thane MLA Sanjay Kelkar, Thane Traffic Police and RTO officials.

The meeting followed an inspection of congested stretches around Thane railway station. Officials also examined traffic-related problems at other key locations in the city, including Wagle Estate, Kopri and Indira Nagar.

Kelkar said authorities are also considering a permanent traffic police presence at busy junctions to address internal congestion and improve the movement of vehicles.

Prepaid Service Awaits State Approval

If approved, the prepaid auto system could make onward travel from Thane railway station simpler by removing the need for passengers to negotiate fares after finding a driver.

With fares fixed beforehand and RTO officials overseeing operations during peak hours, authorities hope to curb fare-related disputes, arbitrary pricing and ride refusals while improving the overall commuter experience.

The service is expected to be introduced once the Maharashtra government’s approval is received.
