Gurugram News: Electric vehicle buyers in Gurugram can now register their vehicles without paying motor vehicle tax, following the Haryana government’s new electric vehicle tax exemption policy, which came into effect on August 21.
The policy offers substantial savings to EV buyers at the time of registration, with the first vehicles registered under the new system already receiving tax benefits in the Gurugram and Badshahpur subdivisions, as reported by The Times of India.
In one of the first registrations under the scheme, a Gurugram resident saved Rs 2,44,900 in motor vehicle tax while registering a Mahindra BE Formula EV. In Badshahpur, a person received a tax benefit of Rs 81,120 while registering a Tata Tiago EV.
100% Tax Exemption For EVs Up To Rs 30 Lakh
Under Haryana’s new policy, new battery-operated electric vehicles priced up to Rs 30 lakh ex-showroom will receive a 100% exemption from motor vehicle tax.
The benefit covers a range of electric vehicles, including:
- Electric two-wheelers
- Electric autorickshaws
- E-rickshaws
- Electric four-wheelers
For electric vehicles priced above Rs 30 lakh ex-showroom, buyers will receive a 50% exemption from motor vehicle tax.
The exemption therefore provides the biggest upfront benefit to buyers purchasing EVs within the Rs 30 lakh price bracket, while more expensive electric vehicles will continue to receive a substantial tax concession.

Gurugram Administration Highlights Pollution Benefits
Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh said the policy would provide direct financial relief to citizens while encouraging the adoption of cleaner modes of transport. “The policy is an important step towards environmental protection as well as providing financial relief to citizens.” Singh added that wider adoption of electric vehicles could help reduce pollution and strengthen cleaner and greener transportation in the city.
The move comes as Gurugram continues to deal with increasing vehicle numbers and concerns over air pollution, making the transition towards electric mobility an important part of efforts to promote cleaner transportation.
Only EVs Purchased And Registered In Haryana Qualify
Badshahpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sanjeev Singla clarified that the tax exemption comes with an important eligibility condition. The benefit will be available only to electric vehicles purchased and registered in Haryana.
EVs purchased in other states will not qualify for the motor vehicle tax exemption under the scheme, even if they are subsequently registered in Haryana.
New Policy Could Make EVs More Attractive In Gurugram
The exemption significantly reduces the registration-related cost of owning an electric vehicle, particularly for models priced up to Rs 30 lakh.
With buyers already saving amounts running into lakhs of rupees, officials expect the policy to make EV ownership more attractive across Gurugram and encourage more residents to shift towards electric mobility.
For a city facing growing traffic, rising vehicle ownership and persistent pollution concerns, the government hopes that reducing the cost of EV ownership will encourage a wider transition towards cleaner transportation.
