DigiYatra, which has streamlined airport processing for domestic flyers in India, could soon be extended to passengers travelling abroad.
The government is preparing to conduct pilot trials for international departures between October and December 2026, according to a Hindustan Times report. The proposed trials are likely to cover five major airports — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Cochin. Delhi and Mumbai are expected to be among the first to introduce the facility.
How Will DigiYatra Work For International Flyers?
The international version is expected to differ from the Aadhaar-based system currently used for domestic travel. Instead, it will rely on electronic passports.
Passengers holding e-passports will reportedly be able to scan their passport’s first page and use their smartphone’s NFC capability to read the chip inside the document. The photograph embedded in the passport chip will then be compared with a live selfie to establish the traveller’s identity.
Once verified, the system will generate a digital credential that can be used at multiple airport checkpoints.
Immigration Process To Remain
The initial rollout will not eliminate existing immigration or emigration procedures. Early trials are expected to cover processes such as entry into the terminal, security screening and possibly boarding.
Immigration and emigration checks are likely to be integrated at a later stage. Until then, international travellers will still have to carry their passports and complete all mandatory immigration formalities.
Security Testing In Progress
The move comes as the government expands digital services across air travel. Since September 1, electronic boarding passes have been accepted at immigration counters, reducing the need for passengers to carry printed boarding passes.
Before the international Digi Yatra trials begin, the upgraded system is expected to undergo security checks, including vulnerability assessment and penetration testing.
If the pilots are successful, the technology could eventually be expanded across more stages of international travel at Indian airports.
