Tesla Cybertruck Production To End In 2027 Amid Poor Sales

Tesla is preparing to discontinue the Cybertruck, with production expected to wind down around mid-2027. CEO Elon Musk confirmed the development in a recent post on X, marking an early end to the electric pickup’s production run, which began in 2023. The decision is expected to help Tesla redirect manufacturing capacity towards its upcoming Cybercab autonomous taxi programme.

The Cybertruck was first showcased as a concept in 2019 and was originally scheduled to enter production in 2021. However, multiple delays pushed its market introduction to 2023, when manufacturing finally commenced at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas.

Positioned as Tesla’s flagship electric pickup, the Cybertruck was intended to compete with models such as the Ford F-150 Lightning. Despite generating considerable attention ahead of its launch, the vehicle has struggled to maintain sales momentum in the years following its introduction.

Why is Tesla discontinuing the Cybertruck?

The Cybertruck’s unconventional design was one of its biggest talking points when it was unveiled. Its angular exterior, stainless steel body construction and distinctive proportions helped it stand apart from conventional pickup trucks. However, the same design also proved polarising among potential buyers.

Pricing was another challenge. The final production version arrived at a significantly higher price than initially indicated during its 2019 unveiling, potentially limiting its appeal to a wider customer base.

The vehicle’s market reach was also restricted by regulatory hurdles. Its exterior construction and design have made it difficult to meet certain European safety requirements, preventing Tesla from expanding sales into an important automotive market.

Tesla’s sales performance has also fallen short of the company’s initial ambitions. While the Cybertruck reportedly has cumulative sales of more than 63,000 units, this remains considerably below Elon Musk’s earlier target of selling around 250,000 units annually.

Controversies surrounding Musk have also coincided with the vehicle’s declining popularity, although the individual impact of these factors on sales is difficult to quantify.

Tesla Cybercab to benefit from freed-up production capacity

The decision to phase out the Cybertruck is part of Tesla’s broader shift towards autonomous mobility and artificial intelligence-based products.

The manufacturing capacity freed up by the pickup’s discontinuation is expected to support production of the Cybercab, Tesla’s upcoming fully autonomous electric taxi. The vehicle has been designed without conventional driving controls, including a steering wheel and pedals. It also features butterfly-style doors and a distinctive body design without a conventional rear windscreen.

Tesla intends to use the Cybercab as the foundation for its planned autonomous ride-hailing service. The company is increasingly prioritising this programme as it expands its focus beyond conventional electric passenger vehicles.

This follows Tesla’s earlier decision to end production of the Model S and Model X, with the company looking to allocate manufacturing resources towards other projects, including its Optimus humanoid robots.

Tesla’s passenger vehicle lineup to become smaller

Following the Cybertruck’s exit, Tesla’s global passenger vehicle range is expected to be centred around the Model 3 and Model Y. These two models account for a significant portion of the company’s vehicle sales.

The next-generation Tesla Roadster is also expected to join the lineup, with customer deliveries currently promised to begin in 2028. Meanwhile, the company is reportedly working on a smaller and more affordable electric vehicle, although its launch timeline and specifications remain unclear.

The Cybertruck’s planned discontinuation highlights the challenges of translating a high-profile product launch into sustained commercial success. For Tesla, the move signals a change in priorities, with greater emphasis on autonomous mobility, robotics and next-generation manufacturing programmes.
