Waterlogged roads, heavy rain and the Ganeshotsav rush are slowing traffic across Mumbai, Vasai-Virar and key Konkan routes
Mumbai Traffic Alert: Waterlogging, slow-moving traffic and the heavy Ganeshotsav rush are expected to keep several key routes under pressure.
Mumbai Traffic News: Heavy rain across Mumbai and neighbouring areas has disrupted road traffic, with severe waterlogging reported near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and in several parts of the Vasai-Virar region. The rain-related disruption comes as thousands of people head towards Konkan for Ganeshotsav, adding further pressure to already congested roads and highways.
Waterlogging near CSMI Airport affected vehicle movement in the area, while heavy showers in Vasai-Virar led to severe waterlogging across several low-lying stretches. On the road from Virar towards the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway, vehicles were seen moving through knee-deep water, with several motorists getting stranded.
The situation has added to difficulties for residents travelling towards their native places for Ganeshotsav, with traffic moving slowly on several key routes.
Traffic Builds Up Near Khalapur Toll Plaza
Heavy traffic was also reported near the Khalapur toll plaza on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Vehicles were queued up for around 2 to 3 kilometres towards the Khopoli-Pali Road and Pali Phata, as the festive rush towards Konkan intensified.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has witnessed a sharp rise in traffic as thousands of devotees travel towards their native villages for Ganeshotsav. Officials said traffic on the expressway has risen to nearly one lakh vehicles a day, compared with the usual 70,000-80,000.
Vehicles heading towards Konkan have also been diverted through the Khopoli exit towards Pali, putting additional pressure on the Khopoli-Pali-Pen route.
Mumbai-Goa Highway Faces Heavy Congestion
The Ganeshotsav rush has also caused major traffic congestion on the Mumbai-Goa highway, with thousands of vehicles heading towards Konkan. Mangaon and Indapur have emerged as major congestion points, where long queues have formed because of narrow stretches and incomplete bypass infrastructure.
At Mangaon and Indapur, motorists have faced significant delays, with reports indicating that even a 5-6 kilometre stretch has taken around 45 minutes to an hour to cross. Police have imposed traffic management measures, including restrictions on parking along parts of the highway, to keep vehicles moving.
Nagothane Bridge Closure Adds To Traffic Pressure
The closure of a bridge at Nagothane has added to the pressure, with traffic being diverted through a service road with limited capacity. Nagothane is among the stretches identified by authorities as vulnerable to congestion during the festival rush.
The diversion has further slowed vehicle movement as the service road struggles to accommodate the increased volume of traffic heading towards Konkan.
Thousands Head To Konkan For Ganeshotsav
The surge in traffic is being driven by a combination of private vehicles, buses and special services carrying people from Mumbai and surrounding areas to their native villages in Raigad, Ratnagiri and other parts of Konkan.
Traffic pressure has also been reported around Panvel and the Palspe area, with heavy vehicles and the increased volume of festival traffic slowing movement. Police teams have been deployed at several locations to regulate traffic, while alternative routes have been identified to ease congestion on the Mumbai-Goa highway.
Rain Adds To Travel Difficulties
With heavy rain now adding another layer of disruption, motorists travelling towards Konkan are likely to face further delays. Waterlogging, slow-moving traffic and the heavy Ganeshotsav rush are expected to keep several key routes under pressure.
Authorities have urged drivers to follow traffic instructions, maintain lane discipline and cooperate with traffic personnel as the festive rush continues.
