Delhi’s Barapullah Phase-3 corridor is finally set to open on September 29. The 3.5-km flyover is expected to cut travel time between East Delhi, Noida and AIIMS to 15 minutes

Delhi News: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the completed Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor in Delhi on Tuesday, September 29. The inauguration is expected to give a major boost to road infrastructure and connectivity in the capital. The corridor is designed to provide seamless, signal-free connectivity between East and South Delhi, linking Mayur Vihar Phase-1 with AIIMS.
Amit Shah will also lay the foundation stones for two new flyovers – the Modi Mill to Kalkaji flyover and the Savitri Cinema half flyover. In addition, he will inaugurate the Mukarba Chowk underpass.
Traffic Restrictions In Delhi Today: What Commuters Need To Know
Commuters travelling through parts of the Ring Road should expect disruptions on September 29 as the inauguration ceremony is expected to draw a large gathering to the Barapullah Phase-III site.
According to the Delhi Traffic Police, traffic movement is likely to be affected between 9 am and 2 pm around Sarai Kale Khan, Maharani Bagh and Ashram Chowk. Visitors attending the event are expected to arrive in buses and private vehicles, which could add to congestion in the surrounding areas.
The traffic police has advised motorists to avoid the Ring Road stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and Ashram Chowk during these hours and opt for alternative routes to avoid delays.
3.5-Km Flyover To Improve East-South Delhi Connectivity
Once operational, the Barapullah Phase-3 corridor will provide a direct, signal-free route between Mayur Vihar Phase-1 and South Delhi. The project is the largest of the four infrastructure projects being inaugurated or launched on Tuesday.
The three-lane, 3.5-km elevated corridor will connect with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan, forming part of a wider stretch of around 9 km.
The flyover features eight loops – four each at Sarai Kale Khan and Mayur Vihar – designed to allow vehicles to enter and exit the corridor and connect with adjoining road networks.
The new link is expected to improve the commute for people travelling from Noida and East Delhi towards South Delhi and AIIMS.
Travel Time From Noida, East Delhi To AIIMS Expected To Fall
One of the key expected benefits of the corridor is a reduction in travel time. According to officials, the journey from East Delhi and Noida to AIIMS could come down from around 35-40 minutes to approximately 15 minutes.
The corridor is also expected to ease pressure on major routes including National Highway-24, the DND Flyway and the Ring Road.
It will additionally improve access to a major multi-modal transport hub, with connectivity to the National Capital Region Transport Corporation, Indian Railways, ISBT, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
Why The Barapullah Phase-3 Project Took More Than A Decade
The Barapullah Phase-3 project was approved in 2014, with construction beginning in 2015. It was initially scheduled to be completed in 2017. However, the project encountered several hurdles over the years, including a seven-year land acquisition dispute, environmental clearance issues and technical challenges linked to construction across the Yamuna floodplain.
After the BJP government came to power in Delhi last year, the Centre cleared the transplantation of trees from the project site, helping address one of the major environmental hurdles.
The prolonged delays also pushed up the cost of the project. Its revised cost is now approximately Rs 1,635 crore, compared with the initial sanctioned amount of Rs 1,260 crore.
Yamuna Bridge Adds To Project’s Engineering Features
PWD officials said an extradosed bridge across the Yamuna has also been completed as part of the connecting structure for the elevated corridor. An extradosed bridge combines features of a conventional girder bridge and a cable-stayed bridge, making the structure one of the notable engineering components of the project.
The corridor also includes a dedicated cycle track and a specialised bridge structure crossing the Yamuna floodplain.
Officials estimate that the project could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 2 tonnes per day. This has been compared by officials with the carbon absorption capacity of nearly 30,000 trees.
Two New Flyovers And Mukarba Chowk Underpass Also Included
The Barapullah Phase-3 inauguration is part of a wider road infrastructure programme covering four projects across Delhi.
Two new flyovers – the Modi Mill-Kalkaji flyover and the Savitri Cinema half flyover – will have their foundation stones laid by Shah. Both are aimed at addressing traffic congestion in South Delhi.
The Mukarba Chowk underpass, located on the Outer Ring Road in North Delhi, will also be inaugurated.
The projects together are intended to address traffic bottlenecks at key locations while strengthening connectivity between major residential, commercial and transport corridors across the capital.
