Bullet Train News Update: The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is carrying out construction work on the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, which will pass through Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The Maharashtra portion of the project is being constructed across the varied terrain of Thane and Palghar districts, with the upcoming Thane bullet train station emerging as one of its key features.

Thane Bullet Train Station Designed To Protect Mangroves

According to a report in The Indian Express, the Thane station will have its concourse level approximately 12 metres above the natural ground level, a design specifically planned to reduce the project’s impact on the mangroves in the eco-sensitive area.

According to the NHSRCL, the elevated concourse has been designed to preserve the mangroves and accommodate the environmental conditions of the site. “At Thane, the station has been designed with the concourse level approximately 12 metres above the natural ground level to preserve the mangroves in the eco-sensitive area,” the NHSRCL said in a statement.

The design sets the station apart from a conventional ground-level railway station, with its elevated structure adapted to the local terrain and surrounding environment.

Ulhas River Inspires Thane Station Entrance Design

The Thane bullet train station is located close to the Ulhas River, which has also influenced elements of its architectural design.

The roof of the station’s entrance building has been inspired by the shape and movement of waves, reflecting the station’s proximity to the river.

Maharashtra Section To Include Three Elevated Stations

The Thane station forms part of the 135.45-km elevated section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor in Maharashtra. The section will stretch from Shilphata in Thane district to Zaroli village near the Maharashtra-Gujarat border and will include three elevated stations:

A substantial portion of this stretch is being constructed through viaducts and bridges. Of the total 135.45-km section, around 124.027 km will comprise viaducts and bridges.

Bullet Train Route To Cross Tunnels And Major Rivers

The Maharashtra section is being constructed through a combination of urban, hilly and environmentally sensitive terrain.

The section will include seven mountain tunnels, of which three have already achieved breakthrough. Work on drainage, waterproofing and tunnel lining is now progressing in these tunnels.

Several river bridges are also under construction. These include:

  • A 460-metre bridge over the Ulhas River
  • A 2.32-km bridge over the Vaitarna River
  • A 510-metre bridge over the Jagani River

The section will also feature 36 bridges and crossings, including 12 steel bridges over major railway lines, the Ulhas River, the Mumbai-Nashik Highway and other important locations.

Construction Work Advances Across Maharashtra

Pier construction is currently under way across more than 100 km of the Maharashtra section. Around 74 km of piers have been completed and are ready to receive viaduct girders, marking further progress on the elevated corridor.

The construction effort is being supported by nine casting yards, seven full-span launching gantries and eight SBS launching gantries, all of which are operational in Maharashtra.

Work at the Thane, Virar and Boisar stations is also progressing as part of the elevated section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor.
