Residents living near five toll plazas in Karnataka can now benefit from the expansion of FASTag local passes across national highways in the country. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said the successful rollout of the online system in Delhi has paved the way for its implementation nationwide. A total of 121 toll plazas have been included in the latest rollout, five of them in Karnataka.

The Karnataka toll plazas covered are Mulawad and Rampura in Bagalkot district, KN Huindy in Mysuru district, Jajirakallu in Hospete and Hirehalli fee plaza in Chitradurga district.

Live Within 20 Km? You Can Apply From Your Phone

Under the new system, residents living within a 20-km radius of the participating toll plazas can apply for a local pass through the Rajmargyatra mobile app, as reported by The Times of India. The online process eliminates the need for eligible commuters to physically visit a toll plaza and submit documents to establish their residential address and other eligibility requirements.

Once the local pass is issued, eligible commuters can make unlimited journeys through the concerned toll plaza during the month, subject to the applicable provisions.

No More Physical Documents At Toll Plaza

Previously, commuters seeking a local pass had to visit the toll plaza concerned and submit supporting documents to prove that they lived within the prescribed 20-km radius. The new online process is intended to make the procedure quicker and more convenient by allowing the relevant information to be retrieved and verified digitally.

According to NHAI, the system uses consent-based integration with government digital platforms, including DigiLocker and the Vahan portal.

Information such as the applicant’s residential address, vehicle details and linked FASTag account can be retrieved and verified through these platforms.

GIS To Check Whether Your Home Falls Within 20 Km

The online verification process also uses a Geographic Information System (GIS) to determine whether an applicant’s residential address falls within the prescribed 20-km radius of the toll plaza.

This means applicants will not simply be able to claim eligibility based on their address; the location will be digitally checked against the applicable radius.

The system is designed to reduce manual verification while ensuring that the local-pass facility is extended only to eligible residents.

Who Can Get The Local Pass?

The FASTag local pass is available only for non-commercial vehicles.

Eligible vehicle categories include:

The vehicle must also have an active FASTag registered with the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) system.

Applicants must meet the prescribed residential and vehicle eligibility requirements before the local pass can be issued.

Pass Pricing Will Depend On The Toll Plaza

The cost of the local pass is not uniform across all toll plazas. NHAI said the pricing varies depending on the toll plaza concerned.

Eligible commuters will therefore need to check the applicable charges while applying through the Rajmargyatra app.

More Karnataka Toll Plazas May Be Added

NHAI said the online local-pass system is intended to make travel more seamless and citizen-centric while improving the efficiency of tolling operations. The nationwide rollout follows the successful implementation of the system in Delhi. More toll plazas in Karnataka are expected to be brought under the system in the next phase in the coming months.

For residents living near the participating toll plazas, the change could make the local-pass process significantly easier by shifting address verification, eligibility checks and application from the toll booth to an online platform.
