Mumbai News: With Ganeshotsav just around the corner, travel between Mumbai and the Konkan region has received a major boost with the launch of a new daily Mumbai-Sawantwadi Road Express.

The train was flagged off from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on September 3, strengthening direct rail connectivity between Mumbai and several towns across Konkan. The service is expected to be particularly useful for thousands of people travelling to their native places for Ganeshotsav.

Mumbai-Sawantwadi Express: Who Flagged Off The Train?

According to a report in Mid-day, the inaugural service was flagged off from Platform 18 at CSMT in the presence of Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane and Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde were also present.

Eknath Shinde described the new service as a major development for Konkan residents, particularly ahead of the Ganesh festival, when large numbers of people from Mumbai travel to their ancestral villages.

Mumbai-Sawantwadi Express: Check Timings

The new service will operate daily in both directions. The CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express will depart from CSMT at 11:55 pm and reach Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 pm the following day.

On the return journey, the train will leave Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 pm and reach CSMT at 6:40 am the next morning.

The overnight schedule is expected to make the train particularly convenient for passengers travelling between Mumbai and Konkan.

Mumbai-Sawantwadi Express: Which Stations Will It Stop At?

The 510-km service will have 23 stations, connecting Mumbai and the Konkan region through a wide network of stops.

The extensive route gives passengers direct access to several important towns across Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

Why The New Train Matters Ahead Of Ganeshotsav

The timing of the launch is significant as thousands of Mumbai residents travel to their ancestral homes in Konkan during Ganeshotsav.

The Railways is also running 350 special trains for Ganesh Utsav this year, with the number capable of being increased to 370 if required, according to the Railway Ministry.

The new daily service will provide another option for passengers who would otherwise have to depend on existing trains, buses or private vehicles during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

New Train Expected To Boost Konkan Tourism

The benefits of the service are expected to go beyond festival travel. Improved rail connectivity could make several Konkan destinations more accessible to tourists, including beaches, forts, temples and eco-tourism spots across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

The easier connection is also expected to benefit hotels, local transport operators, restaurants and other tourism-related businesses.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the service would help take Konkan tourism into its next phase by making the region easier to reach from Mumbai.

Mumbai-Konkan Connectivity To Benefit More Than Tourists

The new train is also expected to benefit students, employees, traders and families who regularly travel between Mumbai and Konkan. Union Minister Piyush Goyal said stronger connectivity could help local producers and businesses transport goods to Mumbai while also improving access to education and healthcare for people living in Konkan.

For Konkan residents working or studying in Mumbai, the additional daily service could also make travelling home more convenient.

A New Travel Option For Ganeshotsav 2026

For Mumbai residents heading to Konkan for Ganeshotsav, the new CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express comes at an important time.

With direct access to towns stretching from Raigad to Sindhudurg and convenient overnight timings, the service could ease some of the pressure on the Mumbai-Konkan travel network during the festival rush.

And beyond Ganeshotsav, the daily connection could give Konkan tourism and local businesses a new push by making one of Maharashtra’s most popular coastal regions easier to access throughout the year.
