Gurgaon Traffic News: Gurgaon commuters are set to face traffic disruption on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway for nearly two months as the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) begins construction of a major stormwater drainage network aimed at tackling recurring waterlogging in the city’s newly developed sectors.

The traffic police on Monday issued an advisory announcing the closure of the NH-48 service road from under the Rampura Chowk flyover towards IMT Manesar. The closure will come into effect at 6 am on August 18 and remain in place until October 15.

According to a report in The Times of India, the disruption is likely to affect traffic movement between Manesar, Rampura, Naurangpur and adjoining sectors. Heavy vehicles and other commuters will be diverted through designated routes during the construction period.

A senior GMDA official said the road would not be closed along the entire stretch at once. Instead, the work will be carried out in phases to limit the impact on traffic. “The work along the NH8 service road will be taken up in phases and the road will be closed section-wise. Initially, a stretch of around 200 metres will be closed, after which the closure will be extended as the work progresses.”

The official said the drain along NH-48 is approximately 4.5 km long and will also be constructed in phases. Signage has already been installed, while the initial stretch is expected to remain under work for around two months.

Rs 105 Crore Drainage Project To Cover 18.3 Km

The road closure is part of GMDA’s Rs 105 crore, 18.3-km master stormwater drainage project covering NH-48 and sectors 76-80. The project, approved by the government in August last year, is aimed at addressing the long-standing waterlogging problem in these rapidly developing areas.

Of the total network, 4.5 km of drain will be constructed along NH-48, stretching from Sector M1D in Manesar to the Central Peripheral Road (CPR) junction. The drain will carry rainwater through gravity flow into the existing master stormwater drains along the CPR and Northern Peripheral Road.

The remaining 13.8 km of the network is being constructed between sectors 76 and 80, creating a master drainage system for the newly developed sectors.

The GMDA official said around 32% of the work on the sectors 76-80 portion has been completed. “Work inside the sectors is progressing. We could not start the work along NH-48 earlier due to the ongoing monsoon and delays in obtaining traffic police permissions, including during the Kanwar Yatra. Work on the NH-48 stretch will now begin and will be executed in phases,” the official said.

Heavy Vehicles To Take U-Turn Before Kherki Daula Toll

Under the traffic diversion plan, commuters travelling from Jaipur towards Delhi and Rampura have been advised to follow the existing designated route. Heavy vehicles heading towards Naurangpur will have to take a U-turn before Kherki Daula toll plaza before proceeding towards Naurangpur. They can also use the Southern Peripheral Road and the Shikohpur route on NH-48.

Commuters travelling from IMT Manesar towards Sector 85 will have to exit at Rampura and proceed towards Sector 85.

Motorists travelling from Rampura towards Jaipur will have to use the Sector 85 service road, take a U-turn before Kherki Daula and then continue towards Jaipur. Those travelling from Sector 85 towards Rampura or Naurangpur have been advised to use the Rampura flyover.

Commuters heading towards Tauru and Naurangpur can use the DLF Privana-Kherki Daula toll route.

Traffic Police Urges Motorists To Follow Diversions

“We have appealed to motorists to use only the designated routes, follow traffic regulations and remain patient during the construction period,” a traffic police spokesperson told TOI.

The spokesperson also urged commuters to follow directions given on the ground and prioritise their own safety as well as that of other road users.

Why The NH-48 Stretch Faces Repeated Waterlogging

At present, the surface drains along NH-48, constructed by the National Highways Authority of India, do not have an adequate disposal mechanism. During heavy rain, water accumulates on the service roads, disrupting traffic, damaging road surfaces and creating recurring bottlenecks, particularly around Rampura Chowk, Vatika Chowk and Manesar.

The new drainage network is intended to provide a dedicated mechanism for carrying away rainwater and reduce the pressure on roads during the monsoon.

Project Target Set For 2028

The overall drainage project has a completion timeline of 2028, although GMDA is hopeful of finishing the work earlier.

Once completed, the network is expected to provide a dedicated drainage system for rainwater and reduce the recurring waterlogging that has become a major monsoon problem across the NH-48 and sectors 76-80 belt.

NH-48 Traffic Advisory: Key Diversions

  • Delhi To Jaipur Service Road: The service road from under Rampura flyover towards IMT Manesar will remain closed from 6 am on August 18 to October 15.
  • Heavy Vehicles Towards Naurangpur: Take a U-turn before Kherki Daula toll plaza, or use Southern Peripheral Road and the Shikohpur route on NH-48.
  • IMT Manesar To Sector 85: Exit at Rampura and proceed towards Sector 85.
  • Rampura To Jaipur: Use the Sector 85 service road, take a U-turn before Kherki Daula and continue towards Jaipur.
  • Sector 85 To Rampura/Naurangpur: Use Rampura flyover.
  • Tauru/Naurangpur: Use the DLF Privana-Kherki Daula toll route.
