GURGAON NEWS: Two foot overbridges (FOBs) built only three years ago in Gurgaon are set to be dismantled to make way for the city’s upcoming Metro corridor, raising concerns over how pedestrian movement will be managed during the transition.
According to a report in The Times of India, the two structures are located near Alpine Public School in Sector 9 and Greenwood Public School in Sector 10 near Basai Pond. Both lie along the proposed Metro alignment between Umang Bhardwaj Chowk and Basai Flyover, where a Metro station is also planned.
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has formally permitted Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) to dismantle the FOBs after the Metro agency said the structures were obstructing the proposed alignment.
FOBs Were Built Just Three Years Ago
The decision is notable as the two foot overbridges were constructed in 2023 as part of a larger Rs 114 crore road infrastructure project. The project included widening the road between Umang Bhardwaj Chowk and Dwarka Expressway, along with a flyover and a railway bridge over the Delhi-Rewari railway line.
The FOBs were intended to provide safer road crossings for pedestrians, particularly students and residents living around Alpine Public School, Basai Pond and adjoining residential sectors. Their removal means infrastructure built to improve pedestrian safety will now have to be dismantled to accommodate another major transport project.
GMRL To Pay For Demolition And New FOBs
Authorities, however, have said pedestrians will not be left without alternative crossings. In a communication dated August 12, GMDA directed GMRL to dismantle the existing structures and construct and commission two replacement FOBs at approved locations along the same Metro corridor.
GMRL will bear the entire cost of dismantling the existing FOBs as well as constructing and commissioning the replacement structures.
The Metro agency will also be responsible for the storage and transportation of the dismantled material, with no financial burden on GMDA. The exact locations of the new FOBs will have to be approved by GMDA to ensure continuous and safe pedestrian movement.
Residents And Students Could Face Temporary Disruption
The demolition could affect residents of sectors 37C, 37D, 9, 9A and 10, who currently use the foot overbridges to cross the busy road corridor.
The FOBs are particularly important around the schools and Basai Pond, where students and other pedestrians regularly cross the road.
Any gap between the demolition of the existing structures and commissioning of the replacement FOBs could therefore create concerns over pedestrian safety.
GMRL Sought Early Removal Of FOBs
GMRL had written to GMDA in June 2026, seeking permission for the early dismantling of the two structures. The Metro agency said the FOBs were ‘infringing’ on the proposed Metro corridor alignment and that their removal was necessary to facilitate construction.
GMDA subsequently granted permission on August 12, 2026.
The decision clears the way for Metro construction along the affected stretch, while requiring GMRL to ensure that pedestrian facilities are restored.
Two New FOBs Planned Along Metro Corridor
Under the arrangement approved by GMDA, the existing FOBs will be removed to facilitate the Metro project, but two new crossings will have to be built along the same corridor.
The replacement structures are intended to ensure that pedestrians continue to have safe access across the road, particularly near schools and residential areas.
The key concern for residents will now be whether the new FOBs are completed before or soon after the existing structures are dismantled.
Part Of 28.5-Km Gurgaon Metro Project
The FOB removal is linked to the larger Gurgaon Metro project, which will connect Millennium City Centre with Cyber City over approximately 28.5 km. The project is being developed in two phases. The first phase will extend towards Sector 9, with a separate spur planned towards Dwarka Expressway.
The proposed Metro corridor between Umang Bhardwaj Chowk and Basai Flyover is part of this expansion and will include a Metro station.
The World Bank has also recently approved a Rs 1,409 crore loan for Phase II of the project.
New Metro Infrastructure Vs Existing Road Assets
The episode highlights a broader challenge facing rapidly expanding cities such as Gurgaon, where roads, flyovers, footbridges and Metro corridors increasingly have to share limited urban space.
As new transport projects are planned, existing infrastructure sometimes has to be redesigned, relocated or removed to accommodate them.
For Gurgaon residents, the immediate questions are when the new Metro station will take shape and whether the replacement FOBs will be ready in time to prevent disruption to pedestrians who currently depend on the two crossings.
