Free Train Travel For Life: New Railway Benefit For Gallantry Award Winners From November 1
For India’s gallantry award winners, travelling by train is set to become easier from November 1, with the Centre introducing a lifetime free travel facility for recipients of the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal awarded for gallantry. The benefit will cover travel in First Class, Second AC and AC Chair Car on Indian Railways, with bookings to be made through the IRCTC web portal. The facility will not be limited to the awardees, but will also extend to their eligible family members.
Spouses of gallantry awardees will be covered under the scheme, while widows and widowers will continue to receive the benefit until remarriage. The provision will also cover the parents of unmarried personnel who received the specified gallantry awards posthumously, recognising the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of the country. The Ministry of Defence has approved the measure as part of its welfare initiatives for decorated Armed Forces personnel and their families, with the entire process being shifted online to make accessing the benefit simpler and more convenient.
The new facility is specifically meant for recipients of the Sena Medal (Gallantry), Nau Sena Medal (Gallantry) and Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry). It is not a general free-travel facility for all serving or retired defence personnel. According to the Army’s announcement, the benefit will apply across Indian Railways and cover First Class, Second AC and AC Chair Car travel. The arrangement is intended to provide long-term travel support to personnel recognised for gallantry and the eligible family members covered under the government order. The provision for families is particularly significant in cases where a gallantry award was conferred posthumously. Parents of unmarried personnel who received the specified gallantry award posthumously are included in the eligible category.
The railway benefit will not be restricted to the medal recipient. Eligible spouses will also be covered under the facility. Where the spouse is a widow or widower, the benefit will remain available until remarriage. The government has also provided for the parents of unmarried personnel who were awarded the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal or Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry posthumously. This provision extends the railway benefit to a specified category of families of personnel who received the award after their death.
Registration To Be Completely Digital: The Ministry of Defence has introduced a digital process for eligible beneficiaries to access the facility. Beneficiaries can register through the Indian Railway Concession Card Portal (IRCCP). Following registration, their eligibility will be authenticated through the prescribed process. Once the verification is completed, an electronic pass will be generated online. The digital system is intended to reduce the paperwork and administrative formalities involved in accessing the railway concession. The Army said the new system will provide a paperless mechanism for implementing the government sanction, allowing eligible beneficiaries to complete registration and receive their travel entitlement electronically.
When Will Train Booking Begin? Although eligible beneficiaries can register through the railway concession portal, ticket booking using the facility will begin from November 1, 2026. Once the e-pass has been generated following authentication, eligible beneficiaries will be able to use the approved concession facility through the IRCTC web portal for bookings from that date. The rollout therefore involves two stages: registration and verification of eligibility, followed by ticket booking through IRCTC from November 1.
Why The Government Has Introduced The Facility? The Ministry of Defence has described the measure as part of its efforts to recognise the courage, sacrifice and service of gallantry award recipients while extending welfare support to their families. Gallantry award recipients include personnel recognised for acts of exceptional bravery in the course of their service. In cases involving posthumous awards, the new provision also recognises the family members covered by the order. The digital system is also intended to make the process of accessing the railway benefit more convenient by replacing a largely paper-based process with online registration, authentication and electronic passes.
