Bengaluru Traffic News: Two-wheelers and passenger autorickshaws will be barred round the clock on the Electronics City Elevated Corridor from September 11 and on the International Airport Road Elevated Corridor from September 4, as part of a Bengaluru Traffic Police initiative to improve road safety and ease congestion on flyovers.

The restrictions, announced on Sunday, will cover five flyovers and elevated corridors, with different curbs imposed on goods vehicles, autorickshaws and two-wheelers. The measures will initially be introduced on a trial basis, after which the traffic police will assess their impact before deciding on further action.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy told TOI that the restrictions followed a detailed study that examined slow-moving traffic caused by goods vehicles and autorickshaws, vehicle breakdowns, and fatal and non-fatal accidents, particularly those involving two-wheelers.

Electronics City Corridor To Face Widest Curbs

The Electronics City Elevated Corridor will have the most extensive restrictions. All heavy, medium and light goods vehicles will be prohibited from using the corridor between 6 am and 10 pm. Two-wheelers, passenger autorickshaws and three-wheeler goods autorickshaws will be prohibited throughout the day.

Karthik Reddy said fatal accidents were higher on the Electronics City flyover than on other flyovers, although exact figures were not immediately available.

Airport Road Corridor To Ban Two-Wheelers, Autos

On the International Airport Road Elevated Corridor, covering the stretch from Sanjeevnagar Cross to Vidyashilp Junction, two-wheelers and autorickshaws will be prohibited 24 hours a day.

Goods vehicles of all categories will be restricted between 6 am and 10 pm.

The restrictions on the International Airport Road Elevated Corridor will come into effect from September 4.

Peenya Flyover To See Peak-Hour Goods Vehicle Curbs

The Peenya Elevated Corridor will prohibit passenger autorickshaws and three-wheeler goods autorickshaws throughout the day.

Heavy and medium goods vehicles will be restricted during peak hours – from 7am to 11am and from 4pm to 10pm. These restrictions will also begin from September 4.

BGS Flyover To Ban Heavy Goods Vehicles

On the BGS Flyover on Mysuru Road, heavy goods vehicles will be prohibited throughout the day. Other goods vehicles, including three-wheeler goods autorickshaws, will face restrictions during the peak-hour periods of 7 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 10 pm.

The restrictions will come into effect from September 4.

Double-Decker Flyover To Restrict Heavy Goods Vehicles

The Double-Decker Flyover between Silk Board and Ragigudda will prohibit heavy goods vehicles 24 hours a day.

The restriction will come into effect from September 4.

Vehicle Breakdowns Among Key Concerns

Vehicle breakdowns, particularly those involving goods-carrying vehicles, were another major concern identified by the traffic police.

“All flyovers witness breakdown of vehicles, especially goods-carrying vehicles. So, we have imposed these restrictions on a trial basis. Based on the results, we will take further decisions,” Karthik Reddy said.

Study Also Examined Flyover Design, Accident Severity

The traffic police said its review also considered several other factors, including the design and width of each flyover, the severity of accidents, congestion at entry and exit points, emergency traffic management, and the safety of pedestrians and two-wheeler riders.

The restrictions on the BGS Flyover, Peenya Elevated Corridor, Double-Decker Flyover and International Airport Road Elevated Corridor will begin from September 4, while those on the Electronics City Elevated Corridor will start from September 11.
