Mumbai News: A large slab reportedly fell from an ongoing Metro construction site in Mira-Bhayandar on Monday, August 17, with pieces of the slab hitting a school van carrying children and raising fresh concerns over safety measures at construction sites.

The incident took place in the Golden Nest area of Bhayander, near Deepak Hospital, where work is underway on Metro Line 9.

According to a report in Esakal, the slab fell during Metro construction work and broke into pieces, some of which hit a school van carrying several children as it passed the site.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.

Large Slab Falls During Metro Work

The incident reportedly occurred while construction work was underway at the Metro site. A large slab fell from the construction area onto the road, with broken pieces striking the school van.

The vehicle was carrying children at the time, making the incident particularly concerning. While no one was injured, the falling slab and debris could have caused serious harm had they landed differently.

The incident has now raised questions over the safety arrangements at the construction site, particularly the measures in place to protect vehicles and pedestrians using the road alongside the ongoing work.

Metro Construction Site Safety Under Scanner

Construction sites involving heavy materials and work at height require adequate barricading, protective structures and safety measures to prevent construction material from falling onto public roads.

The latest incident has prompted concerns over whether sufficient precautions were in place at the Metro Line 9 work site.

The presence of a school van carrying children near the construction zone has further highlighted the need for strict safety measures around areas regularly used by schoolchildren and other members of the public.

Incident Comes After Chembur School Van Tragedy

The Mira-Bhayandar incident comes nearly a month after a tree fell on a school van in Chembur, Mumbai, killing a student.

The two incidents are unrelated, but the latest episode has once again brought the safety of school vehicles and children travelling through areas with potential hazards into focus.

In Mira-Bhayandar, the situation could have been far more serious had the falling slab directly struck the passenger section of the van or a pedestrian nearby.

Calls For Accountability Over Construction Safety

The incident has also prompted calls for greater accountability from agencies responsible for monitoring Metro construction work.

Questions have been raised over whether the construction site had adequate protection to prevent slabs and other construction material from falling onto the road.

The incident also highlights the importance of securing construction materials and maintaining proper safety barriers around work zones, particularly where construction is taking place alongside busy roads used by school vehicles and the general public.

Authorities are expected to examine how the slab fell and whether the required safety measures were in place at the time of the incident.
