Hyundai Compact EV India Launch Expected in January 2027

Hyundai Motor India is expected to unveil its upcoming sub-four-metre electric SUV in January 2027. The model was initially planned for a launch by the end of 2026, following an earlier timeline that pointed to a debut by March 2027.
The latest timeline places the electric SUV’s debut in the first quarter of 2027. Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO Tarun Garg had previously indicated that the model would arrive before the end of 2026, while the company’s 2026 CEO Investor Day presentation had outlined a launch by March 2027.
The upcoming model is being developed specifically for the Indian market and is expected to enter the growing sub-four-metre electric SUV segment.
Hyundai compact EV: Platform and battery options
The new electric SUV will be based on Hyundai’s E-GMP (K) platform, which also underpins the Hyundai Inster sold in international markets. Production is planned at the company’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu.
Hyundai is expected to offer the India-specific model with two battery configurations: Standard Range and Long Range. The company has not disclosed their capacities, power outputs or driving ranges yet.
For context, the international-spec Inster is available with 42kWh and 49kWh battery packs. These versions deliver claimed WLTP ranges of up to 300 km and 355 km, respectively. The Standard Range variant produces 97 HP and 147 Nm, while the Long Range version develops 115 HP and 147 Nm.
However, these figures relate to the Inster and should not be taken as indicative of the specifications of the India-bound SUV. Its battery capacity, performance and range will be confirmed closer to its unveiling.
The compact EV is expected to initially use battery cells supplied by Svolt. Hyundai also plans to transition to locally sourced cells through its partnership with Exide, although delays in Exide’s battery production have affected the localisation timeline.
Hyundai compact EV: Features and equipment
Hyundai has confirmed that the upcoming electric SUV will feature Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and a next-generation infotainment system. The precise equipment list for the Indian model has not been announced.
The infotainment system could potentially draw from Hyundai’s newer Pleos Connect technology, although the company has not confirmed whether it will be offered on this SUV.
The international-spec Inster provides some indication of the features Hyundai offers in this segment. It comes with dual 10.25-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, automatic climate control and a 360-degree camera with blind-spot monitoring.
Whether the India-spec model receives these features, or a different equipment configuration to meet its price positioning, remains to be seen.
Hyundai compact EV: Rivals in India
Once launched, the Hyundai compact electric SUV will compete with models such as the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and the upcoming Kia Syros EV.
The sub-four-metre segment is becoming an important area for electric vehicle manufacturers, as it combines relatively compact dimensions with the practicality expected from an SUV. Hyundai’s positioning will depend on factors such as pricing, battery options, driving range, equipment and charging capabilities.
With its Indian-market focus and local manufacturing plans, the new EV will expand Hyundai’s electric vehicle portfolio in the country. More details about its specifications, pricing and market launch are expected to emerge closer to its debut in early 2027.
