JLR has started assembling the Defender 110 in India, lowering prices of select variants by up to Rs. 34 lakhs. The move brings the SUV’s starting price down to Rs. 99 lakhs, ex-showroom, New Delhi, while the more powerful 3.0-litre petrol and diesel versions are now priced at Rs. 1.18 crore each.

The price revision applies to the X-Dynamic HSE variants of the Defender 110. The 3.0-litre diesel, which produces 350 HP, and the 3.0-litre turbo-petrol, developing 400 HP, now cost Rs. 1.18 crore each, compared to Rs. 1.52 crore previously. Meanwhile, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol version, producing 300 HP, is priced at Rs. 99 lakh, down from Rs. 1.13 crore.

The reduction follows the transition from importing these vehicles as completely built units (CBUs) to assembling them in India through the completely knocked down (CKD) route. The revised pricing applies to the specified Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE configurations, rather than the entire Defender range.

Defender 110 gets additional standard equipment

Alongside the price revision, the locally assembled Defender 110 receives additional equipment as standard, with the additions varying according to the engine option.

The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol version gains features previously offered as options on the imported model, with the company citing a value of up to Rs. 6.5 lakh for the added equipment. These include adaptive off-road cruise control, air suspension with adaptive dynamics, a digital interior rear-view mirror, three-zone climate control and an air purifier.

The standard equipment list also includes a headlight washer, spare wheel lock, body-coloured spare wheel cover, manual third-row seats and a front centre console refrigerator. The SUV also gets 14-way electrically adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation and memory functions.

3.0-litre Defender 110 variants receive more equipment

The 3.0-litre petrol and diesel versions receive additional equipment valued at up to Rs. 17 lakhs, according to JLR. The additions include 20-inch wheels, illuminated metal treadplates, an electronic active differential with torque vectoring and four-way manually adjustable winged headrests.

Other additions include manual slide and recline functions for the second-row seats, heated third-row seats, a suede headliner, three-zone climate control with rear cooling, a Meridian surround sound system and a head-up display.

The expanded standard equipment list is a significant part of the revised offering, as some of these features were previously available as optional extras on the imported versions. However, the stated equipment values represent the company’s assessment of the additions and should not be interpreted as equivalent cash savings for every buyer.

Defender 90 and 110 Octa remain imported

The local assembly programme does not extend to the entire Defender line-up. The Defender 90, standard Defender 110 variants outside the specified locally assembled configurations, and the Defender 110 Octa will continue to be imported as fully built units.

JLR India also locally assembles select versions of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport.

Local assembly allows JLR to revise the pricing of the specified Defender 110 variants while adding equipment to their standard specification. The extent to which the lower prices translate into stronger demand will depend on buyer response, particularly in the luxury SUV segment, where the Defender competes on off-road capability, performance and premium equipment.

Bookings for the locally assembled Defender 110 are open through online and offline channels, with deliveries scheduled to begin on November 15.
