Traffic near Delhi’s Ghazipur Border is moving slowly amid pressure on NH-9. The congestion comes as Kanwar Yatra diversions affect key Delhi-Ghaziabad routes

Ghaziabad Traffic News: Traffic movement on NH-9 near the Ghazipur Border, also known as UP Gate, within Delhi’s boundary was reported to be extremely slow, triggering traffic pressure in the area.

Ghaziabad Traffic Police personnel were deployed at the spot to regulate the movement of vehicles and manage the congestion. The Delhi Traffic Police was also informed about the situation for further necessary action.

The latest traffic disruption comes amid extensive diversions and road restrictions in Ghaziabad during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, with large numbers of devotees travelling towards Haridwar to collect Kanwar.

Why Is Traffic Heavy Near Ghazipur Border?

The congestion has been linked to restrictions imposed on several routes to facilitate the movement of Kanwariyas.

On Monday, a large number of devotees travelled towards Haridwar for the Dak Kanwar. In view of the movement of Kanwariyas, the Delhi-to-Meerut carriageway of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) was reserved for Kanwar traffic.

The route from Ghaziabad had also been closed, forcing a large volume of regular traffic towards alternative roads. As a result, motorists faced heavy congestion on NH-9, the NH service lane, Meerut Road and GT Road during both morning and evening peak hours.

Several commuters reported taking hours to cover distances that would normally take only a few minutes.

Delhi-Meerut Expressway To Reopen

The Delhi-Meerut Expressway is expected to reopen to regular public traffic by the evening or late night, providing relief to commuters affected by the diversions. The DME has several entry points after UP Gate on the Meerut side, including Vijaynagar, Crossing and Dasna.

Police had barricaded the entry points to prevent regular vehicles from entering the expressway while it was reserved for Kanwariyas.

With vehicles being diverted towards the National Highway, traffic pressure increased sharply and resulted in long queues.

Cars Crawl On Ghaziabad Roads

The impact of the diversions was felt across several major roads in Ghaziabad.

Traffic was reportedly snarled for nearly three hours, with commuters travelling home from work facing similar congestion during the evening.

Police also installed barricades at Hapur Tiraha, while the flyover beginning near the Clock Tower was blocked for vehicles.

The additional pressure on GT Road affected traffic movement in adjoining areas, including roads serving residential colonies such as Shalimar Garden.

Modinagar Also Sees Kanwar Traffic

In Modinagar, the Delhi-Meerut Kanwar route remained occupied by Dak Kanwar processions through much of the day.

Large numbers of devotees from Delhi and other parts of the NCR also travelled through the expressway area.

Officials said lakhs of Kanwariyas entered Ghaziabad through the Kadarabad check post and the Niwari Ganga Canal route, adding to the pressure on roads across the district.

Traffic And Security Arrangements Tightened

The restrictions are part of wider preparations for the Kanwar Yatra, during which authorities have introduced diversions and road closures to ensure the safe movement of devotees and minimise inconvenience to the public.

The Delhi-Meerut Expressway remained closed to regular public traffic until the evening of August 10 and August 11, with authorities planning to reopen it by the evening or night.

The reopening is expected to significantly ease congestion on NH-9 and other roads currently carrying diverted traffic.

Authorities have also strengthened security and emergency arrangements across Ghaziabad. A total of 294 Kanwar camps and 120 medical teams have been deployed across the city. More than 2,000 CCTV cameras have also been installed as part of the security arrangements.

As traffic pressure continued near the Ghazipur Border, Ghaziabad Traffic Police personnel remained deployed at the site to manage vehicle movement.

The Delhi Traffic Police has also been informed about the congestion for further necessary action.
