Independence Day 2026: Delhi is gearing up for the 80th Independence Day celebrations on August 15, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

With thousands of guests and visitors expected to attend, security has been tightened across the capital, and special arrangements have been made for transport, parking and entry to the venue.

Here are 10 key things to know before heading to the Independence Day ceremony.

1. Book Your Red Fort Entry Pass Online

People planning to attend the ceremony can book passes through the government’s official Aamantran portal. Visitors need a registered mobile number and a valid identity document to complete the booking process.

The process involves selecting ‘Independence Day Ceremony 2026’, adding attendee details, choosing a ticket category and making the payment online.

However, the portal is currently showing ‘No tickets are available’. Those hoping to attend can keep checking the official portal for any further availability.

2. How Much Do Independence Day Tickets Cost?

Entry passes are available in three categories:

  • General: Rs 20
  • Standard: Rs 100
  • Premium: Rs 500

Visitors should check the latest availability and ticket details on the official Aamantran portal before making plans.

3. Carry The Same ID Used For Booking

Those attending the ceremony must carry the same identity document used while booking the ticket.

Accepted documents include Aadhaar Card, Voter ID and Passport. Children above five years of age will also need Aadhaar proof and a separate ticket.

The entry pass is non-transferable, so visitors should ensure that the details on the ticket and ID match.

4. Delhi Metro Will Start At 4 Am

The Delhi Metro will start services at 4 am on August 15 to help special guests, invitees and the general public reach the Independence Day celebrations.

Trains will initially run at a 30-minute frequency on all lines until regular services begin.

According to reports, the DMRC has also provided 1.30 lakh special pre-vended QR tickets to the Ministry of Defence for special guests and bona fide invitees.

5. Three Metro Stations Near Red Fort

If you are travelling by Metro to reach the Red Fort, the nearest stations are:

  1. Lal Quila
  2. Jama Masjid
  3. Delhi Gate

Given the expected crowds and traffic restrictions, using the Metro could be a more convenient option for many visitors.

6. Parking Has Been Mapped Online

The Delhi Traffic Police has mapped seven designated parking sites near the Red Fort digitally. The locations are available through Google Maps, while the Mappls app will generate QR codes for the parking sites. Visitors can scan the QR codes to find their designated parking location.

The arrangement has been introduced to make it easier for visitors and dignitaries to locate their parking areas.

7. Check What You Can And Cannot Carry

Security checks will be strict at the venue. Visitors should avoid carrying prohibited items, including bags, power banks, cameras, laptops, tablets, earphones, water bottles, umbrellas, perfumes, sprays, sharp objects and inflammable items.

Umbrellas are specifically prohibited, although raincoats are allowed.

Visitors should also follow instructions from security personnel and avoid blocking aisles during the programme.

8. Security Checks Will Be Tight Across Delhi

Security has been stepped up across the capital, with increased patrolling, vehicle checks, drone surveillance and mock drills.

Entry and exit points, markets, malls, hotels and other sensitive locations are under heightened surveillance. Checks are also being carried out at Delhi’s borders.

In Gurugram, around 4,500 police personnel have been deployed along with 11 major checkpoints. Faridabad Police has also established 11 interstate checkpoints.

9. Expect Traffic Restrictions Around Red Fort

People travelling through central, north and east Delhi should plan their journeys carefully as traffic restrictions will be in place around the Independence Day celebrations.

Several roads near the Red Fort will face restrictions, while bus services and commercial vehicles may also be diverted or curtailed.

Those travelling to railway stations, hospitals or other important destinations have also been advised to allow extra time for their journeys.

10. ‘Vande Mataram’ To Be A Major Highlight

This year’s ceremony will have a special feature: ‘Vande Mataram’ will be sung from the Red Fort for the first time during the Independence Day celebrations.

The ceremony will mark 150 years of the national song, with the song set to be performed before the national anthem. The celebrations will also put a special focus on ‘Yuva Shakti’.

Security Arrangements In Gurugram And Faridabad

Security preparations are not limited to Delhi. In Gurugram, quick reaction teams, rooftop surveillance and anti-sabotage checks have been deployed at strategic locations, while hotels, restaurants, malls and other public places are being checked.

Five fire tenders and five ambulances will remain stationed at celebration venues. Faridabad Police has similarly stepped up surveillance and checking at interstate entry points.

Check Your Pass Before Leaving Home

Visitors should check their entry pass, reporting instructions and identity document before leaving for the Red Fort. They should also follow the latest security instructions and allow extra time for travel due to the expected crowds and traffic restrictions.

With Metro services beginning early and security checks expected to take time, reaching the area well in advance could help avoid last-minute delays.
