Travelling By Mumbai Metro? You Can Now Buy Your Pass On WhatsApp; Check How To Buy

Mumbai News: Mumbai Metro One has become the first Metro service in India to issue Metro passes entirely through WhatsApp, allowing commuters to buy, store and use their passes directly from the messaging platform. The new digital pass system, introduced on Sunday, is available to commuters travelling on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor. The passes can also be added to Google Wallet and Apple Wallet, allowing passengers to access them directly from their smartphones.

How To Buy Mumbai Metro’s Digital Pass On WhatsApp? Buying a digital Metro pass involves three simple steps. Commuters need to send “Hi” to Mumbai Metro One’s WhatsApp number, +91 9670008889. They can then select ‘Book Now’, choose the ‘Digital Pass’ option and complete the payment. Once the transaction is completed, the pass is issued instantly and can be used immediately. The system means commuters no longer need to visit a station counter to purchase a pass or carry a separate physical card for their regular journeys.

Two Types Of Digital Passes Available: According to a report in The Times of India, the new system offers two pass options to suit different travel requirements. The Trip Pass is aimed at commuters who follow regular travel patterns and allows them to purchase a predefined number of journeys in advance. The Store Value Pass, meanwhile, allows passengers to load an amount of their choice. The applicable fare is then automatically deducted from the balance after each journey.

A senior Mumbai Metro One official told TOI that the digital pass enables passengers to access both Trip Passes and Store Value Passes without requiring a physical card or a separate mobile application. The official added that commuters can conveniently add the pass to Google Wallet or Apple Wallet and access it directly through their smartphones.

The new digital pass facility builds on Mumbai Metro One’s existing WhatsApp eTicketing platform, which was launched in November 2022. The platform already allows commuters to purchase QR-based tickets for single journeys digitally. The introduction of digital passes expands the system to cover regular commuters who frequently use the Metro. The move is aimed at reducing reliance on physical tickets and making the ticketing process more convenient for passengers.

UPI, Debit And Credit Card Payments Supported: The digital pass platform has been developed and facilitated by Billeasy, while PayU India provides the digital payment infrastructure. According to the Metro official, commuters can make secure payments using UPI, debit cards and credit cards. The WhatsApp-based system therefore brings ticket purchase, payment and access together on a platform already widely used by smartphone users.

Mumbai Metro One completed 12 years of operations in June this year and has carried more than 125 crore passengers since its launch. The operator said the new digital pass initiative reinforces its focus on technology-driven and customer-centric mobility solutions. By allowing passengers to purchase and access passes digitally, the system is expected to reduce dependence on physical tickets and shorten queues at metro stations. For daily commuters on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, the new facility is designed to make regular metro travel faster, simpler and more convenient.
