A section of the Ganga Expressway near Sonic in the Dahi area was submerged following rain on Monday, with water accumulating to around two feet at the toll plaza and along nearly half a kilometre of the service lane.
The flooding disrupted movement for motorists, with water entering smaller vehicles as they attempted to cross the stretch. The situation has also triggered safety concerns because a high-tension power line passes directly above the toll plaza.
Road Damage Adds To Concerns
The waterlogging comes amid allegations of negligence against Patel Infrastructure, the agency executing the Ganga Expressway project.
According to a news report in Jagran, the stretch between Bashirganj and Sarain Katian has reportedly developed cracks and suffered damage around half a dozen times so far. The latest incident has added to questions over the condition of the road and the arrangements for handling rainwater.
Sonic Toll Plaza Submerged
According to reports, rainwater began collecting around the Sonic turn near Bashiratganj on Monday morning. The toll plaza and an adjoining service lane extending for around half a kilometre were subsequently flooded.
The water rose to approximately two feet, making the route difficult for motorists to negotiate. Some small vehicles were affected as water began entering them, leaving drivers distressed.
Despite efforts to clear the accumulated water, the flooding continued until evening.
Tractors And Tube Wells Used To Clear Water
Once the executing agency was alerted, workers began removing water from the toll area and service road.
Tube wells and tractors were brought in to drain the flooded sections. However, the volume of water meant that the operation could not be completed in a few hours. The agency is expected to require another one to two days to completely clear the affected area.
Agency Cites High-Tension Line
RS Mishra, manager of Patel Infrastructure, said the location of the high-tension power line restricted the height at which the toll plaza could be constructed. He said a clearance of 14 metres is required between the high-tension line and the road. As a result, the toll plaza could not be raised further.
He said the possibility of such severe waterlogging had not been anticipated during construction. Following the incident, the agency plans to construct a wall along the toll plaza to prevent a recurrence and provide a permanent solution to the problem.
High-Tension Line Raises Safety Fears
The waterlogging has raised an additional concern because the high-tension line runs directly above the Sonic toll plaza.
With a substantial amount of water accumulating around the toll area, concerns have been raised about the potential electrical risk to motorists and passengers. Any serious electrical incident in such conditions could have severe consequences for people passing through the flooded stretch.
The incident has therefore brought both drainage arrangements and safety around the toll plaza under scrutiny.
