Pune News Update: Pune railway station is headed for a substantial infrastructure overhaul, with railway authorities working to make the station capable of handling longer trains and a larger number of services.

A key part of the exercise is the redevelopment of the railway yard. Existing platforms are being lengthened, additional platforms are being created and the signalling network is being upgraded with an electronic interlocking system intended to make train movements safer and more efficient.

At present, only two platforms at the station can accommodate trains with full-length coach formations. The remaining platforms are being extended to enable them to handle longer rakes.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Divisional Commercial Manager Hemant Kumar Behera said yard redevelopment and platform extensions are currently among the division’s key priorities. Only two platforms can accommodate full-length trains at present, with work underway to extend the others so they can handle longer rakes.

Pune station sees roughly 150 trains each day, counting services that begin their journeys there, terminate at the station or make a passage through it. Once the ongoing infrastructure works are finished, railway officials anticipate the addition of around 20 more services.

The projects being undertaken by the Pune division are expected to be completed over a period of approximately three years.

Six More Platforms Planned At Pune Station

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined the station’s expansion plans in June during the flag-off ceremony of the Pune-Sai Nagar Shirdi Express. Under the plan, the station’s existing six platforms will be increased to 12. Vaishnaw also cited the recent improvements at Hadapsar railway station, where three platforms have been modernised and another has been constructed. The changes have allowed the station to accommodate five additional trains a day.

The investment planned for Pune station covers both passenger facilities and operational infrastructure.

A substantial portion of the Rs 202.39 crore earmarked for passenger facilities, Rs 129.57 crore, has been set aside for the three new platform pairs, 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12. The allocation also covers supporting facilities such as foot overbridges, a skywalk, lifts and escalators.

Existing platforms are also being taken up for improvement. A provision of Rs 37.12 crore covers work on platforms 1 to 6, including repairs and upgrades to flooring, painting, toilets and drainage systems.

Further allocations include Rs 22.13 crore for setting up a permanent holding area and Rs 13.57 crore for a new parcel office.

Yard Works To Add Tracks And Stabling Lines

As per the IE report, a separate allocation of Rs 239.64 crore has been approved under traffic facilities specifically for remodelling the railway yard. Among the planned changes are extensions to platforms 2/3, 4/5 and 6, along with the addition of two platform lines.

Additional stabling tracks are planned within the yard to provide space for trains when they are out of service. These tracks are used to keep trains temporarily when they are not operating.

The plan further provides for a third main line linking the Ghorpadi Coach Maintenance Complex in Pune with Hadapsar.

The revamped yard is set to be equipped with electronic interlocking technology to manage train movements. Behera said the existing route relay interlocking system is being replaced with electronic interlocking technology, with the aim of strengthening safety as well as improving the efficiency of railway operations. The signalling arrangements are being modernised alongside the physical expansion of the yard.

Work has already been carried out during three infrastructure blocks, covering signalling and telecommunications upgrades and overhead equipment works linked to the replacement of the DDS point.

The rail layout in the Pune yard has also undergone an upgrade, with the existing 52-kg rails replaced by a 60-kg layout. Behera said additional infrastructure blocks are likely to be taken up as the yard redevelopment progresses.

However, the new platforms will not become operational immediately after their construction. They will be commissioned after the supporting connectivity infrastructure, including foot overbridges and circulating areas, is ready.

Rs 23,900 Crore Railway Investment In Maharashtra

The Pune expansion forms part of a wider railway development push in Maharashtra.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Centre has set aside around Rs 23,900 crore for railway development in the state this year.

Ashwini Vaishnaw also unveiled a proposal to develop a dedicated Mega Coaching Terminal at Alandi. The facility is proposed on existing railway land and is planned to have nine platforms and 17 stabling lines.

Together, the planned changes at Pune station and the proposed Alandi terminal are aimed at expanding the railway network’s ability to accommodate additional train operations while improving the infrastructure available for passengers and train handling.
