Mumbai Metro Line 3, or the Aqua Line, will run throughout the night on Friday, September 25, to support devotees travelling for Ganpati visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi.
The overnight service is aimed at easing travel as immersion processions continue late into the night and spill into the early hours of Saturday. Devotees returning after witnessing the processions will have an additional public transport option instead of depending entirely on private vehicles.
Ganpati immersion processions traditionally continue for several hours on Anant Chaturdashi, particularly as major mandals begin their journeys towards Mumbai’s prominent immersion points.
Why Overnight Metro Services Matter
The extended Metro operation comes as large crowds are expected across Mumbai for the final day of the Ganeshotsav celebrations.
Metro services across the city have also been extended on occasions during the festival to accommodate devotees travelling late at night for darshan and pandal visits. The overnight Line 3 service on the immersion day will provide another option for passengers travelling after normal operating hours.
The arrangement is particularly relevant for commuters looking to avoid road congestion during the city’s busiest immersion period.
22 Special Night Local Trains For Ganpati Visarjan
Mumbai’s suburban railway network is also expanding late-night connectivity. Central Railway will operate 22 special night suburban services during the Ganpati festival period. On the Main Line, special services will run between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kalyan/Thane on the nights of September 23-24, September 24-25 and September 25-26.
Four additional services will operate on the Harbour Line between CSMT and Panvel during the night of September 25-26, coinciding with Anant Chaturdashi immersion.
The special trains will stop at all stations on their respective routes, allowing passengers to continue their journeys even after the regular late-night services have ended.
Special CSMT-Kalyan And CSMT-Thane Train Timings
On the Down Main Line, the special services include:
- CSMT-Kalyan Special: Departs CSMT at 1:40 am, reaches Kalyan at 3:10 am
- CSMT-Thane Special: Departs CSMT at 2:30 am, reaches Thane at 3:30 am
- CSMT-Kalyan Special: Departs CSMT at 3:25 am, reaches Kalyan at 4:55 am
On the Up Main Line:
- Kalyan-CSMT Special: Departs Kalyan at 12:05 am, reaches CSMT at 2:00 am
- Thane-CSMT Special: Departs Thane at 1 am, reaches CSMT at 2 am
- Thane-CSMT Special: Departs Thane at 2 am, reaches CSMT at 3 am
These services are part of the additional night connectivity planned by Central Railway for the festival period.
Four Special CSMT-Panvel Trains On Immersion Night
On the night of September 25-26, four special trains will operate on the Harbour Line.
Down Harbour Line
- CSMT-Panvel Special: 1:30 am to 2:50 am
- CSMT-Panvel Special: 2:45 am to 4:05 am
Up Harbour Line
- Panvel-CSMT Special: 1 am to 2:20 am
- Panvel-CSMT Special: 1:45 am to 3:05 am
The trains will halt at stations along the respective routes.
Western Railway Adds 12 Night Services
The late-night arrangements are not limited to Central Railway. Western Railway will run 12 additional suburban services on the night of September 25-26. The six pairs will operate between Churchgate and Virar, with the special trains stopping at all stations on the route.
The additional services are intended to help passengers returning after the immersion celebrations as crowds disperse across the city.
Girgaon Chowpatty Gets Ready For Anant Chaturdashi
Meanwhile, preparations are underway at Girgaon Chowpatty, one of Mumbai’s key Ganpati immersion locations. Booths, tents and other arrangements were being put in place ahead of Friday’s visarjan. The seafront is expected to witness a heavy turnout as devotees gather to watch some of the city’s most prominent Ganpati idols arrive for immersion.
Major immersion locations across Mumbai include Girgaon Chowpatty, Juhu Beach and Dadar Chowpatty, along with several other designated sites.
Mumbai Braces For A Long Night Of Visarjan
Anant Chaturdashi falls on Friday, September 25, 2026, bringing the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations to a close. Large idols from prominent mandals are expected to be taken out in elaborate processions, accompanied by music, dancing, chants and large gatherings of devotees.
